Why You’ll Love This Recipe
These homemade pita chips don't require much preparation, time, or equipment. All you need is an air fryer and simple ingredients: pita bread, oil, and salt. In less than 15 minutes you'll have the perfect snack to pair with hummus or tzatziki or an amazing side for Mediterranean dishes, such as our Greek chicken sheet pan. We have kept this recipe for crispy pita chips very simple, but you can customize the spices you use to mix up the flavor too! See our suggestions for variations below.
Ingredient Notes
- Pita bread - you can use any type of pita bread to make these crunchy pita chips, whether that be regular pita bread or whole wheat pitas—choose whichever you prefer! We have used store-bought pita bread such as the Joseph’s brand. These pita chips are also a great way to use up leftover pita bread or stale pita bread that you didn't quite get through with other meals you had planned. Be sure to use a gluten-free option if necessary.
- Non-stick spray or olive oil/avocado oil - you will need to use a small amount of oil to make these pitas. We have found using a non-stick cooking spray to be easier and faster, but you can also brush on some extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil instead.
- Sea salt - sprinkle salt to taste here!

Tips & Variations
- The cooking time can be adjusted for softer or crispier pita chips. If you like a chewier pita chip, simply reduce the amount of time you cook the pita chips (start with 4 minutes and go from there). If you want a crispier chip, you can try cooking them for 8 minutes, and increase the time until you have the desired result.
- Use your favorite spices to mix up the flavor of these delicious air fryer pita chips. Here are a few ideas! Sprinkle with garlic powder, onion powder, za'atar, parsley, chili powder, etc. If you're looking for a sweet option, cinnamon sugar would be delicious!
- You can also mix up the way you serve these pita chips by choosing your favorite dip. Some options include hummus, tzatziki, white bean dip, spinach artichoke dip, whipped feta dip, a layered Mediterranean dip, or a cheese ball. If you make cinnamon sugar pita chips, a great option is to serve it with our favorite fruit salsa!
FAQ
We recommend storing the pita chips in an airtight container or ziplock bag at room temperature. We recommend eating them within 2-3 days for best results, however, they can keep for up to a week. We suggest warming them up in the air fryer for a minute before eating them again.
For best results, we recommend reheating the pita chips in the air fryer. Some air fryers have a reheat method you can use. Check the pita chips every few minutes until they are warm and at the desired level of crispiness.
If you don't have an air fryer, you can make homemade pita chips in the oven with similar results. To do this, follow the same preparation instructions, spread the pita triangles out on a baking sheet, and bake them in the oven at 425 degrees F for 5-10 minutes. Check on them frequently to get them to the level of crispiness you desire.
These homemade air fryer pita chips are vegan and vegetarian. To make then gluten-free or dairy-free, ensure the pita bread you use meets those criteria.
