Ingredient Notes
For the potatoes:
- Russet potatoes - these roasted potatoes are like eating a burger with a side of crispy fries. You could also swap with sweet potatoes to give more of a sweet potato fries feel.
- Olive oil
- Onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt - you'll use the same spices for the potatoes and the meat, simplifying the meal even further!
For the meat:
- Lean ground beef (or lean ground turkey) - instead of using a burger patty you'll cook up some juicy ground beef to add to the bowls. Another option you can use for hamburger meat is ground turkey for a turkey burger bowl.
- Onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt - all the spices needed to make flavorful ground beef.
The homemade burger sauce:
These are the ingredients you will need to make the special burger sauce! It is comparable to the sauce you'd find on an In-N-Out burger.
- Mayo
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Pickle juice or dill relish
For the bowl:
- Romaine lettuce - crisp, fresh lettuce provides the base for this cheeseburger salad creating a flavor similar to a lettuce wrap burger. You can also use iceberg lettuce or butter lettuce if you prefer, but we recommend choosing a crispy lettuce. Buying a bag of pre chopped lettuce can also help cut down on prep time.
- Chopped red onion
- Cherry tomatoes - juicy tomatoes are a must on a good burger! Keep it simple by halving some cherry tomatoes here.
- Sliced dill pickles
- Other delicious toppings:
- Try adding other classic burger toppings such as avocado, crispy bacon, ketchup, mustard, cheese, or grilled onions. Throw on your favorite toppings to customize the bowls to your liking!

Step by Step Directions
For the full recipe instructions, scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of the page.
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Chop the potatoes into small cubes (about ½ inch) and place them in a large mixing bowl. Measure out the oil, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and salt and add them to the bowl. Mix well until the potatoes are evenly coated. Spread the potatoes into an even layer on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through, until they are soft and slightly crispy (you can leave them in the oven for longer if you want them to be crispier).
Step 2: While the potatoes are baking, begin cooking the ground beef. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add the meat to the pan. Break the meat into small pieces using a rubber spatula, stir frequently, and cook thoroughly until there are no pink spots. If there is a lot of excess grease, drain the grease or use paper towels to soak it up. Remove from the heat. Next, measure out the spices, add them to the meat, and mix until the meat is evenly coated with the spices. If you are finding it difficult to evenly coat the meat with the spices, you can add a tablespoon of water to help mix it in.
Step 3: In a small bowl, measure out the ingredients for the homemade burger sauce and whisk until well combined. Set aside.
Step 4: Prepare your burger bowl toppings. Chop the lettuce and red onion, halve the tomatoes, and prepare any other toppings you will be using.
Assemble the burger bowl by first creating a base of lettuce in the bottom of the bowl. Top with meat, potatoes, your favorite toppings, and the homemade burger sauce. Enjoy!
Tips & Variations
- You can also cook your potatoes in an air fryer if you prefer that over baking in the oven.
- If you prefer cheeseburgers, add some shredded cheddar cheese to make a cheeseburger bowl.
- Feel free to swap the ground beef for ground turkey if you prefer turkey burgers.
FAQ
We recommend storing the potatoes, meat, lettuce and your favorite toppings in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator.
This recipe is gluten-free. It is dairy-free depending on the toppings you select. For a vegetarian or vegan option, you can break up a plant-based burger patty instead of ground beef.
